Wednesday was move-in day for on-campus students at CU Denver. Lynx residents were busy shuttling carts with their earthly belongings to and from Lynx Crossing and City Heights residence halls. Large gray boxes on wheels held everything from pillows and pianos to backpacks and Bluetooth speakers. Amid black and yellow balloons, students, along with their friends and families, waited to get to their rooms and discover their downtown digs.
In the lobby of City Heights, first-year student Jacquelyn Chavira waited for an elevator to transport her and her stuff to a brand-new room. At the third-floor hangout space, Resident Assistant (RA) Abigail Bergstrasser directed people and answered questions. Film major Clayton Breitenstein and his mother Su Chae lounged on a sofa, happy to be finished with the move-in process. “I’m glad we got here early and missed all these long lines,” Chae said, looking out one of City Heights’ picture windows.

Down the hall from Breitenstein, Stacie and Kevin (AKA mom and dad) were helping their daughter Reilly get settled in. Reilly Kearns, a psychology major, was excited to be the very first person to occupy her half of the room at City Heights, the recently completed residence hall for first-year students. Kearns’ brother and boyfriend, CU Denver student Graehame Webb, hid under her bed, proving its roominess.
Volunteers in yellow T-shirts helped new residents navigate campus. Peer Advocate Leader (PAL) Vanessah Goze gave everyone a welcoming smile (behind her mask, of course). “I’m handing out stickers and greeting people,” she said. Outside, Milo the Lynx was also greeting student residents, pleased to pose for pictures.
Despite the heat, on-campus residents, especially first-year students, were happy to experience the normal comings and goings of move-in day. After pandemic disruptions to everyday life and educational plans, even waiting in line was stimulating. Welcome to campus living in downtown Denver.
