📰 News we're reading

• Grand Valley can — but hasn't — asserted rights to water being used in Vail area (vaildaily.com) — If you get water from an Eagle County provider tied to the Historic User Pool, expect strict conservation this year — likely indoor use plus just one day a week of outdoor watering. Western Slope irrigators are sacrificing their senior rights to keep Eagle-area taps flowing, but local officials warn every extra lawn watering could hurt farms and river habitat.

• Wildfire risk on Western Slope to rise in June amid ‘uncertainty' about whether El Nino will stave off fire risk later this summer (vaildaily.com) — Eagle County remains in the highest level of drought, putting our area at above-normal wildfire risk through at least August, according to federal fire and weather forecasters. While an emerging El Nino could eventually bring more rain, experts say uncertainty is high and residents on the Western Slope should prepare for a hotter, drier summer and elevated fire danger.

• Ranch employee reportedly shot and killed mother wolf in Colorado (denvergazette.com) — A major cattle ranch that spans into Eagle County is under scrutiny after an employee fatally shot the matriarch wolf of the King Mountain pack during a March livestock encounter. State and federal officials are now weighing whether the killing, which orphaned four pups and followed denied lethal control permits, meets Colorado’s narrow legal exceptions for shooting a wolf.
