DOE opens Geothermal Center of Excellence in Golden, Colorado to target gigawatt-scale output (gcn.com) — A major new U.S. Department of Energy Geothermal Center of Excellence has just opened on the National Laboratory of the Rockies campus in Golden, positioning the city at the heart of next‑generation geothermal research. The center will coordinate national labs and industry partners to accelerate gigawatt‑scale geothermal power, bringing new federal jobs, research activity, and high‑profile visitors to Golden while shaping how clean, firm energy grows across the West.

Golden on a Wartime Footing (goldentoday.com) — A 1918 issue of the Colorado Transcript shows how Golden residents experienced World War I, from strict draft registration rules to a local businessman's son earning praise as a soldier. Articles describe School of Mines students beginning military training and townspeople being urged to donate to support Liberty Loan outreach, offering a vivid snapshot of Golden on a wartime footing.
   

3. We're so much more civilized. (goldentoday.com) — An 1860 edition of Golden's Western Mountaineer contrasts Denver's secretive vigilante justice with a more formal "citizens' trial" held in Golden for two accused horse thieves. With witnesses, lawyers, and a jury that ultimately acquitted the men, the episode highlights how Golden was already striving for more orderly justice than its frontier neighbors, despite earlier rougher cases.

Corruption scandals, silver coins and grasshoppers were the hot topics in Colorado's 1876 election (durangoherald.com) — Colorado's first state elections in 1876 featured fierce partisan battles over corruption, silver coinage, and relief for farmers devastated by grasshoppers, with newspapers driving much of the debate. Golden's own Transcript, then a leading Democratic paper, strongly praised the Manitou platform and criticized Republican positions, showing how Golden helped shape statewide political arguments from the very beginning.
