📰 News we're reading

1. Man who died in custody faced assault for striking man who hurt son in bias-motivated attack (westernslopenow.com) — A Grand Junction-area father who died in Mesa County Sheriff's custody in August has been identified as the same man who earlier assaulted someone accused of attacking his gay son. Prosecutors say deputies won't face charges, citing an autopsy that found no fatal injuries and ruled his death was tied to drug intoxication with other contributing factors. The case highlights ongoing questions about mental health, substance use, and law enforcement response in Mesa County.

2. Grand Valley Transit expanding service with three new paratransit buses (kkco11news.com) — Mesa County commissioners have approved funding for three new Grand Valley Transit paratransit buses serving Grand Junction, greatly expanding capacity for riders with disabilities. The upgraded vehicles will carry more passengers and wheelchairs, helping residents reach jobs, appointments, and essential services, with the buses expected to join the fleet by the end of next year.

3. Grand Valley Transit to change routes starting Monday (westernslopenow.com) — If you rely on Grand Valley Transit in Grand Junction, expect route and stop changes starting Monday as construction-related delays force long-term detours. Route 1 will skip parts of Main, Ute, and Pitkin, while Routes 3, 4, 10, 5, and 11 see adjusted stops or ongoing detours. Officials say the tweaks should protect on-time transfers while road projects continue across Mesa County.

4. Friday Night Blitz '26: Week 7 (kkco11news.com) — High school football fans in Grand Junction saw the Tigers dominate Greeley West 38-0 at Stocker Stadium, improving to 6-1 behind a bruising ground game and stout defense. Fruita Monument fell 31-7 to Montbello in the doubleheader's opener, while Central lost at Rifle, and Montrose and Cedaredge picked up important wins as the playoff picture sharpens.

5. Fruita man arrested for LSD and felony warrant (westernslopenow.com) — Mesa County deputies arrested a Fruita man this week after allegedly finding LSD on him during a warrant arrest on Red Cliffs Drive. In a separate case, a Grand Junction resident was found with a stolen vehicle in Clifton and suspected meth, leading to theft and drug charges and a personal recognizance bond. Both men were booked into the Mesa County Detention Facility.
