Belmar Police Standoff: ID Of Man Who Died Still Not Released
Residents in Belmar were kept out of their homes overnight as police tried to negotiate with a barricaded man who was later found dead.

LAKEWOOD, CO – Lakewood police declined to release the name Monday of the man found dead after an overnight standoff in the Ashford Belmar Apartments Saturday night.
"The suspect is deceased," Commander Mark Reeves said in an email. "Despite him being deceased, the investigation is ongoing so more specific details aren’t being released at this point. Because it is still an active investigation and not even known anyway if relatives have been notified, his identity won’t be released at this time."
Neighboring apartments were evacuated and residents were told they could not return home for hours until mid-morning Sunday when a county bomb squad robot entered the apartment and found the man dead. Reeves said he did not know how many residents were affected.

"That’s a wide open apartment complex and residents couldn’t get in past the perimeter points," he said.
The incident started Saturday night when officers responded to a domestic violence call at 7379 W. Kentucky Dr. The man in the apartment was believed to be armed. A woman managed to escape the unit.

Police were in negotiations with the barricaded man for around 12 hours until he stopped responding to their efforts. Meanwhile, residents were unable to get to their homes, or care for their pets, they told police via Twitter.
Sheriff's officers entered after the robot and found the man dead of an apparent self-inflicted injury. Police cleared the scene around 9:25 a.m. Sunday.
LPD is still making efforts to contact the suspect in the Ashford Belmar area. We sincerely apologize for those who are still waiting away or at home. It is for everyone’s safety that the negotiations are ongoing.
