Here are the top stories in Lakewood today:

  1. Thornton water fight threatens new housing projects. Builders raise alarms in Thornton in fight over who will get water, and who won't. The shortage is happening (at least in part) because Thornton hasn't been able to get the water it owns from the Poudre River. (Subscription/Denver Post)
  2. Do you have what it takes to be the next Colorado Poet Laureate? Nominations for the next Colorado Poet Laureate opened this week and you can nominate your favorite poet through Feb. 1, 2023. The governor selects the Colorado Poet Laureate, who then serves a four-year term and does lots of activities and events around the state. (Colorado)
  3. 100+ car pileup in Denver closed 6th Avenue both ways on Friday morning. Sixth Avenue was closed in both directions between N. Klamath Street and N. Federal Boulevard because of slick roads that caused nearly 100 cars to smash into each other. It appears that there were no drivers with life-threatening injuries caused by the pileup. (Patch)
  4. Metro area school districts are facing the prospect of having to close schools. Here's how each one is handling the process and the responses from the community. (CO Sun)
  5. Is another COVID-19 surge on the way? The past two winters have seen huge number of positive cases of COVID-19. What is the outlook for this winter and what can you do to protect yourself? (CO Sun)
