Here are the top stories today in Lakewood:

  1. Jefferson County School district braces for school closures. With years of steady declines in enrollment across the district, the school board is forced into the unpopular position of deciding which elementary schools they'll have to close. (Chalkbeat)
  2. Municipalities suing Broomfield over Jefferson Parkway plan. Jefferson County and the City of Arvada filed a lawsuit against Broomfield for pulling out of the partnership to build a $250M parkway in 2020. (Arvada Press)
  3. Why are gas prices so high? Supply is reduced and demand is high. These simple economic principals are contributing to rising prices at the pump. This, coupled with increased crude oil prices, probably means that gas prices will continue to rise. (FOX31)
  4. Free transit in August may not be a done deal. RTD has applied for a grant to provide a zero-fare August, but is still waiting to hear from the office of Colorado Energy. The program recently passed by the state legislature, envisions free transit in the month of August, will cut ozone emissions in the regional transit district. (Denverite)
  5. Union says that Starbucks is "banking on terror-effect to scare workers away from unionizing." As more stores move to organize, the coffee chain has been pushing back by filing complaints against workers leading union efforts in their stores. (CO Sun)
