Lakewood Police Investigating Officers Involved In Shooting

Lakewood Police are investigating two officers involved in an incident that occurred early Sunday morning in Wheat Ridge.

LAKEWOOD, CO — Lakewood Police are investigating an incident early Sunday morning in which members of the West Metro SWAT Team shot and killed a man who was ignoring instruction to drop his handgun.

The West Metro SWAT Team is made up of members from the Lakewood and Wheat Ridge Police Departments and serve both cities.

Members of SWAT were called to the American Motel located in Wheat Ridge close to 1 a.m. on Sunday. An investigation revealed that a wanted adult male was staying at the motel.

Upon arriving at the scene, SWAT attempted to convince the suspect to leave the room for close to two hours, according to the Lakewood Police Department. However, after the suspect showed no intent of doing so, SWAT entered the room where they encountered the man armed with a handgun.

After multiple commands to drop the weapon were ignored, the suspect was subsequently shot by two SWAT Team members, both Lakewood Police Agents.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team will investigate the shooting, and consistent to policy, the Lakewood police officers who shot the suspect will be placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.

The name of the suspect has not yet been released.
