Man Arrested After Standoff In Lakewood: Police

LAKEWOOD, CO — A man was arrested Thursday night after a long standoff with police at a home in Lakewood, officials said.

Vernon Hazel, 54, is accused of "shooting multiple rounds from a firearm both in and out of the home," according to the Lakewood Police Department.

Police were called to the 900 block of South Sheridan around 3:55 p.m., and a Code Red shelter in place order was issued to the surrounding neighborhood, police said. Neighbors were warned that an "active shooter" was firing rounds, according to officials.

"Over the course of several hours, multiple attempts by negotiators were made to get Mr. Hazel to exit the home," Lakewood police said in a news release.

"Those attempts were ignored by Mr. Hazel and he continued shooting off rounds."

The West Metro Swat Team was able to get into the home around 10:30 p.m., and Hazel was arrested, police said.

No injuries were reported during the standoff.
