LAKEWOOD, CO — A man was shot and killed by a Lakewood police officer Thursday night, officials said. Officers were called to a home around 3:15 p.m. in the 2400 block of Youngfield Street, where they found a 47-year-old man destroying property in the home, police said.

The officers spent several hours trying to contact the man, but he refused to leave the home, according to the Lakewood Police Department.

The officers then saw smoke coming out of the home around 5:20 p.m., and when they went inside the building, the man tried to attack them, police said. The officers tried to "use less lethal weapons" to stop the attack but were unsuccessful.
