LAKEWOOD, CO — A man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for a kidnapping and assault at a Lakewood motel in 2018, the First Judicial District Attorney announced Tuesday.

Darrius Deon Holmes, 37, and Ruby Arely Serrato, 21, kidnapped a 47-year-old Lakewood man and held him in a motel for two nights while they beat him with a chain and tasered him, the DA's office said. Serrato was sentenced Aug. 2 to 24 years in prison.

On Nov. 13, 2018, Lakewood police were called to 11100 W. 8th Avenue, where they found a man suffering from serious injuries. He had been "held prisoner" for two nights and assaulted repeatedly, the DA's office said.

The victim had previously loaned money to Serrato and was asking her to repay the debt. On Nov. 11, she convinced the man to go with her to her room at the Crossland Motel, 715 Kipling, to get the money, according to the DA's office.

The man was then blindfolded, bound with rope and taped to a chair, prosecutors said. For the next two days and nights, he was whipped with a chain, beaten, punched, kicked and tasered, the DA's office said.

Holmes and Serrato then took the man to his home so that they could find out where he lived, and warned him not to call the police or they would "get him," authorities said. The man managed to escape and found someone nearby, who called 911.

“This was a violent and brutal assault. Both Holmes and Serato deserved every day of their sentences,” Jeffco DA Pete Weir said in a statement. “Those who commit this type of violence in our community must held accountable.”

Holmes pleaded guilty Sept. 11 to first-degree assault, robbery and one violent crime count. Serrato pleaded guilty July 3 to conspiracy to commit first-degree assault, conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery and kidnapping.
