Here are the top stories in Lakewood today:
- Suspect pleads guilty in Gail Wilson murder. One of the individuals that was involved in the disappearance of Gail Wilson, 81, last October, has plead guilty to a charge of concealing Wilson's death. It's believed that Wilson was beaten to death and then dumped in a dumpster in Cherry Creek. The other two suspects involved in the incident are set for hearing next month. (9News)
- Project proposed near RTD's Sheridan Station. The proposed project would include five stories of new housing and additional income-restricted units. The empty lot on West Colfax fenced off and filled with weeds, but a concept has been submitted to the City of Lakewood to build a residential apartment building. (Denverite)
- Despite the zoo's best efforts, several birds have tested positive for avian bird flu. Caretakers at the Denver Zoo have been keeping a watchful eye on their birds since the avian bird flu started spreading earlier this year, but the zoo is now reporting that two birds that died tested positive. The zoo has been taking additional steps to protect other susceptible birds. (9News)
- Colorado has fallen behind on air quality and monitoring air pollution. Advocates across the state are calling on Gov. Jared Polis to "go further, faster" in an effort to combat climate change and the states severe air quality issues. (CO Newsline)
- Colorado ramping up plan to deal with housing and homelessness. Colorado is planning to pour $650 million into homelessness over the next year by using funds from the federal American Rescue Plan Act. Nearly two-thirds will go toward housing and the rest will fund homeless services campuses. It's a big number going into a problem that needs a lot more zeroes attached to it. (News Break)
