Cyclist, 67, Killed Near Littleton Identified
Mark Shafer was struck and killed on his bike while attempting to cross Cole Mine Avenue, the Colorado State Patrol said.

LITTLETON, CO – A Littleton man was identified as the cyclist killed Wednesday afternoon in southern Jefferson County after being struck by a car.
Mark Shafer, 67, was crossing the street on his bike from the north around 4 p.m. in the middle of the block when he was hit by the 18-year-old driver of a red Pontiac Trans Am traveling eastbound on Cole Mine Avenue, said Colorado State Patrol spokesman Trooper Gary Cutler. Shafer was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
The driver was not found to be at fault. "No charges were filed against the driver," Cutler said.

The driver, identified as "William," reached out to Patch with more photos and said he wanted to make sure Shafer's family knew he was sorry. He said he pulled the emergency brake and swerved to the left to avoid Shafer, who was wearing a bike helmet. "Maybe [Shafer] thought he could beat us across."
"I'm just very sorry for their loss and I want them to know I tried everything I could to swerve out of his way."
