Colorado Fire Threat Stops Popular Buckhorn Lakes Recreation (kool1079.com) ā Buckhorn Lakes Park above Montrose is closed until further notice because the Gold Mountain Fireās evacuation zone comes right up to Storm King Mountain. Nearby properties remain on pre-evacuation, so residents should be ready to leave quickly and avoid the area. Locals looking to cool off are urged to use in-town Montrose parks or head toward Blue Mesa instead.

2. Montrose residents ID'd in fatal US 550 crash (westernslopenow.com) ā Two Montrose residents have been identified as the victims of a June 29 crash on U.S. 550 south of town that also seriously injured a 1-year-old. State Patrol says an eastbound Corolla tried to pass in a no-passing zone, lost control, left the roadway, and hit a Ram 2500, killing both passengers and injuring the truckās driver.

3. Western Colorado Law Enforcement Academy ranked second in the state (westernslopenow.com) ā Montroseās Western Colorado Law Enforcement Academy, hosted by Montrose Police with Montrose County Sheriff and Colorado Mesa University, has been ranked second among 26 Colorado academies. With a 100% POST exam pass rate and scenario-based training, the 17-week program offers local students college credit and a pathway into a wide range of public safety careers.

4. Celebrating 100 years of Montrose baseball! (mississippivalleypublishing.com) ā Montrose baseball fans are getting a nostalgic look back as the local youth ball season wraps up and high school teams head into tournament play. A reprinted 1926 Montrose Journal account recalls the townās first organized baseball game in 1872, complete with underhand pitching, homemade willow bats, and an umpire learning the rules from a book.

5. New Colorado Building Rules Aim to Reduce Wildfire Risk (townsquarenoco.com) ā If youāre planning to build or remodel in Montrose County this year, new wildfire-resistant building rules taking effect July 1 could change your materials, design, and costs. The Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code, recently adopted by Montrose and Mesa counties, will apply to projects in designated Wildland-Urban Interface areas across the Western Slope.
