4.7 Magnitude Earthquake Recorded Off Coast, Felt In Connecticut

An earthquake centered off the coast was recorded by the USGS, possibly the biggest in 7 years to impact CT. Did you feel it?

A 4.7 magnitude earthquake was recorded Tuesday evening off the coast of Ocean City, Md., but the effects of it were felt in several states, including Connecticut.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was at a depth of 10 kilometers, or 6.2 miles, about 136 miles off the coastline. It's among the biggest to impact Connecticut since a 5.8 earthquake in 2011 was felt up and down the East Coast, and caused damage to hundreds of homes and structures.

There have been no reports of damage in the Tuesday quake. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had not reported any tsunami activity off the East Coast. According to the USGS website, 78 responses were logged saying the earthquake had been felt.

This isn't the first time Connecticut has felt the impact of an earthquake. In February 2018, Ridgefield residents woke up to items rattling in their homes after a 2.2 earthquake was recorded in the New York Lake Mohegan area.

Connecticut also felt the impact of an earthquake occurred in November 2017 when a 4.1 magnitude earthquake rattled the East Coast including CT, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake occurred near Dover, Del.

And in December 2017, a minor earthquake was felt in several areas of north central Connecticut. According to the United States Geological Survey, a 1.9 magnitude earthquake was felt in places like Newington, Berlin, New Britain and Hartford. Officially, that earthquake took place 8.6 miles south-southwest of Hartford and happened at about 1:40 a.m.

Earthquakes happen when there is movement below the Earth's surface on fault lines. They can occur anywhere in the U.S. and usually last less than a minute, according to FEMA.
