CT Firefighter Struck, Killed In Car Vs. Pedestrian Accident: Police

A volunteer firefighter was killed while crossing the road following a trunk-or-treat event Sunday, according to state police.

SALEM, CT — A 69-year-old volunteer firefighter was killed while crossing the street to his house following a trunk-or-treat event in Salem on Sunday evening, according to state police.

Police identified the victim as Willis Sands.

Sands was leaving a trunk-or-treat event at 6:56 p.m. at the Gardner Lake Volunteer Fire Company where he was a member. The area where he was crossing was dark with no auxiliary lighting or crosswalks, according to state police.

A minivan driving north on Route 354 passed the fire department and struck Sands as he crossed the road, resulting in his death.

The minivan's driver was transported to Backus Hospital for evaluation.
