Town-By-Town Look At CT Students Test Scores: New Report

The results are in for the 2018-2019 Smarter Balanced assessment for students in grades three through eight. Here is a town-by-town look.

HARTFORD, CT — Scores on the 2018-2019 Smarter Balanced assessment for students in grades three through eight were up slightly from the previous year in both English language arts and math. The improvement was even better for high needs students.

The percentage of students meeting proficiency in ELA increased from 55.3 percent in 2017-2018 to 55.7 percent for the current school year. In math the increase in students meeting or surpassing proficiency went from 46.8 percent to 48.1 percent. Proficiency for math has increased 9.2 percentage points since the test was first administered in the 2014-2015 school year. Improvements in scores for high needs students (low income families, English learners, students with disabilities) are showing an even faster rate of improvement.

“While we continue to see promising year-to-year increases for all student groups meeting or exceeding their achievement benchmark in both ELA and math, our mission to close gaps around the state remains a priority,” said Education Commissioner Miguel Cardona. “Together with our districts and school leaders, we will identify the local practices that are working and focus our support on the instructional core at the heart of our work.”
