Firefighters Free Worker Trapped In Machine In Thomaston: FD

The man was trapped in a pneumatic press while working at a local business Monday, according to the fire department.

THOMASTON, CT — Firefighters rescued a worker who was trapped in a machine at UniMetal Surface Finishing on Monday.

Glenn Clark, chief of the Thomaston Volunteer Fire Department, said emergency personnel were summoned to the business, at 135 South Main St., around 10:23 p.m.

Emergency personnel arrived within two minutes, and found the man trapped in a pneumatic press. The victim was conscious and alert, and the upper half of his torso was stuck inside the machine, officials said.

Firefighters used a battery-powered Jaws of Life to open the press and free the trapped worker. The extrication took 21 seconds from start to finish, according to the fire department.

Emergency medical responders evaluated the worker on scene and transported him to an area hospital for treatment. His condition was not immediately available Tuesday.

UniMetal provides metal finishing services to a variety of industries, such as the automotive, medical, fastener and communications sectors, according to its website.
