Former Redding School Chair Pleads Guilty in Sex Assault Case

The charges include risk of injury to a minor and promoting a minor in an obscene performance.

REDDING, CT -- Former Redding Board of Education chairwoman Sara Sobel plead guilty Wednesday to risk of injury to a minor and promoting a minor in an obscene performance, The News Times is reporting.

She had previously rejected a plea deal, and will be sentenced October 24 in Danbury Superior Court where she faces a 30-year prison term, suspended after 10 years.

Sobel and her husband Jon were arrested in April 2017 on a charge of risk of injury to a minor. Police said they failed to cooperate with the Department of Children and Families during an investigation into a sexual assault.

This past February, former Redding resident Stephen Overby plead guilty to first-degree sexual assault of a minor under the age of 13, risk of injury and possession of child pornography. Prosecutors have alleged that Sara Sobel gave some of the materials -- dozens of child pornography videos and images -- to Overby. In court documents, Overby was described as a close personal friend Sara Sobel.
