CONNECTICUT — Westport School District ranked No. 1 among 129 Connecticut school districts in the education platform Niche’s 2023 Best Schools and Districts rankings released Tuesday.

The Westport district was among 85 Connecticut school districts included in Niche’s ranking of 11,820 school districts nationwide.

The school district, which has 5,329 students in seven buildings, received high marks from students, parents and teachers. The PK, K-12 student-teacher ratio is 11 to 1. The average salary for teachers in the Westport School District is $96,938.

According to state test scores, 82 percent of students are at least proficient in math and 85 percent in reading.

Niche also ranked 92,743 public schools and 30,112 private schools in the 2023 report. The platform said its rankings were created to provide families with valuable information — both quantitative and qualitative — on schools in their area or in a neighborhood they’re not familiar with yet.

Staples High School in Westport was named the top public high school in the state, and No. 144 in the nation, according to rankings released Tuesday by Niche.

The new 2023 Best Schools and Districts rankings provide insight for parents on 92,743 public schools, 30,112 private schools and 11,820 school districts nationwide.

The rankings differ from others that rely almost exclusively on test scores and academic performance in that it also includes input from students, alumni and parents, as well as quantitative data from sources such as the U.S. Department of Education to evaluate teachers, resources and facilities.
