Tornado Watch Issued For Most Of Connecticut

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for most of Connecticut until 10 p.m.

CONNECTICUT — A tornado watch is in effect for most of the state until 10 p.m. Sunday, the National Weather Service said.

And a tornado warning was also issued briefly for Litchfield County Sunday evening.

A series of storms has moved through the state Sunday afternoon, especially in Hartford and Tolland county thus far. The tornado watch is in effect for Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex, Hartford, Tolland, and Litchfield counties. New London and Windham County are not included in the tornado watch.

The storms could produce hail, possibly the size of a ping pong ball, and wind gusts up to 70 mph, according to the weather service.

On Sunday evening, the National Weather Service issued a tropical storm watch for southern Connecticut in advance of Tropical Stom Isaias' arrival on Tuesday. (See related: Tropical Storm Watch Issued For Southern Connecticut)

The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning until 4 p.m. for parts of Hartford and Tolland county, which has since expired. At 3 p.m. a severe thunderstorm was located over Glastonbury.

And in an update, the weather service issued a thunderstorm warning for Tolland and Windham county until 4:30 p.m., which has also expired.

More details concerning southern Connecticut:

Thunderstorms are possible this eveningm which may include gusty winds, heavy rain and small hail. "The slight risk of severe thunderstorms covers Northeast NJ, much of NYC, Northern Nassau, the Lower Hudson Valley and much of Southern CT."

"Damaging winds main threat with large hail smaller threat. With the warm front moving across and enhanced low level helicity with that enhanced low level shear, an isolated tornado is possible as well," the weather service said.

And after 6 p.m. more storms are expected in southwestern Connecticut and heavy rain and damaging wind are the major concerns.


More details concerning northern Connecticut:

A few strong thunderstorms had formed in northwest Connecticut on Sunday afternoon and this evening there is a risk for an "isolated tornado, especially in the slopes of the Berkshires and the CT Valley into the evening hours."

By 6 p.m. in northern Connecticut, most of the storms should be over, the weather service said.
