Avon Boy Scout Troop Selling Christmas Trees, Host Bottle Drive
Redeemable cans and bottles piling up?

From Town of Avon
AVON - Redeemable cans and bottles piling up? Please donate them to Avon Boy Scout Troop 274’s quarterly Can and Bottle Drive on Saturday, Dec 13th from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at J.Foster Ice Cream Shop, on Route 44 next to Fresh Market.
You’ll notice that J.Foster is once again home to Troop 274’s Fir Forest. After dropping off your cans and bottles, why not pick out a lovely, fragrant Christmas tree or holiday wreath for your family? Our Balsam Firs are 6 feet to 8 feet tall, and sell for $46 to $69. Due to popular request, we are also offering Fraser Firs this year. Our Fraser Firs range from 6 feet to 8 feet tall, and sell for $60 to $84. You’ll also find a beautiful selection of wreaths in two sizes: 16-inch wreaths for $18 or 20-inch wreaths for $22. Come on over and tag your tree or wreath - and roast a marshmallow over the fire!

Trees and wreaths can be purchased at J.Foster’s Ice Cream Shop starting the weekend before Thanksgiving, through the month of December, while supplies last. Our tree stand hours are from 3 p.m. - 8 p.m. on Fridays, and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Order online anytime from the convenience of your own home at mkt.com/troop274trees - then choose your own tree at our stand or let us select and deliver to your home within the Farmington Valley!
Proceeds from both events will benefit the 2015 High Adventure scout contingents to Maine and New Mexico. Troop 274 will send 3 crews (21 scouts) on the Maine trip to canoe the Allagash Waterway, spend 8 nights in the backcountry, and hike to the summit of Mt. Katahdin. Next summer, our scouts will also form 2 crews (20 scouts) for a 12-day backcountry backpacking trek at Philmont Scout Ranch, which consists of 137,500 square miles in New Mexico’s Rocky Mountains.

Proceeds from last year’s fundraising defrayed costs for the 2014 High Adventure scout contingents to the Black Hills of South Dakota and to Florida Sea Base. In addition to spending a week at Medicine Mountain Boy Scout Camp in South Dakota, scouts on the South Dakota trip went white water rafting in Colorado, visited Devil’s Tower National Monument in Wyoming, toured Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument, Deadwood, SD Air and Space Museum and Jewel Cave National Monument in South Dakota. Scouts who went to Florida Sea Base crewed a 75-foot tall-masted ship, taking turns cooking in the galley, navigating, raising and lowering sails, swabbing the decks, taking night-anchor watch, fishing for dinner and snorkeling on some of the best coral reefs in the Florida Keys. Prior to arriving at Sea Base, these scouts visited many attractions including Kennedy Space Center and took sailboard and paddleboard lessons.
Boy Scout Troop 274 has over 80 active scouts. The troop carries out many service projects in the community including displaying over 200 American Flags on Route 44 several times a year. The troop is proud to be active in the local community and elsewhere. Thank you for supporting your local Boy Scout Troop at these two fundraisers.
