AVON, CT — Local taxpayers Monday will have the chance to tell Avon finance officials what they think about how they'll spend their tax dollars next fiscal year and how high their taxes will go.

The Avon Board of Finance is hosting a hybrid-format public hearing Monday, April 3, on a combined town/school budget proposal totalling $110.1 million, a budget 3.62 percent larger than current spending.

Monday's budget hearing will be held in a hybrid format (in-person at the Avon Senior Center, 635 West Avon Road, as well as virtually via GoToMeeting.) It will take place from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

As currently proposed, the budget plan will require a tax hike, with the mill rate tentatively slated to grow from 34.61 to 35.71 mills, for a 1.1-mill tax increase.

It means if your home is assessed at $250,000, your taxes this year will increase by $275.

To calculate a personal tax hike, take the assessed value of a home, divide by 1,000 and then multiply that figure by 1.1.

The finance board is charged with adjusting the budget based on input from the town and its taxpayers, so what is voted on in May at the polls isn't, necessarily, what will be discussed Monday.
