Avon Farm Wants To Feed 100,000 Needy Families Thanksgiving Dinner

The farm and Connecticut Foodshare aim to feed 100,000 families in need this Thanksgiving, kicking off an initiative on Nov. 1.

AVON, CT — A local farm in Avon has announced it is central to a massive effort in Connecticut to help feed families a traditional Thanksgiving dinner that, otherwise, might be unaffordable.

Miller Farms, 308 Arch Road, Avon, is continuing its 70-year tradition of selling Thanksgiving turkeys to fight food insecurity in partnership with Connecticut Foodshare, a member of the Feeding America network.

Miller Farms began as a small poultry farm in Connecticut.

“It’s an important part of who we are and something we are proud of,” said Cal Miller-Stevens, chief ambassador of Miller Farms.

Miller Farms has applied for and received 501(c)(3) certification for a new non-profit called “Miller Farms Cares,” so they can now accept tax-deductible donations from individuals and corporations to promote the cause.

Founded in 1950, Miller Farms is a fourth-generation, community-driven business.

In 2020, Miller Farms began a partnership with Connecticut Foodshare to expand
its mission and dedication to lifting up those around them.

Since 2020 alone, Miller Farms has fed 200,000 people during their famous “Thankful Turkey” holiday promotion through direct sales to individuals, businesses, local grocery stores and schools.

This year, they have set an ambitious goal to feed 100,000 people to ensure that everyone
has a turkey at Thanksgiving.

Also, 10 percent of all sales will be donated to Connecticut Foodshare in the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving.

At millerfarms.us, anyone can directly purchase a Thankful Turkey or infamous family spice blend for themselves, neighbors, family members, employees or friends.

All purchased goods will be delivered directly anywhere in the United States.

People can also purchase turkey(s) as a donation directly to Connecticut Foodshare.

“We are thankful to our friends at Miller Farms for supporting our mission and vision of a thriving community free of hunger here in Connecticut and for everything they’re doing to support food insecurity throughout the country,” said Jason Jakubowski, president and CEO of Connecticut Foodshare.
