As First Ladies, Barbara and Laura Bush had profound impacts on American life. As Barbara famously said, “Our success as a society depends not on what happens in the White House, but what happens in your house.” However, what happened in the White House—and perhaps more importantly—what happened in the Bush homes before the presidencies, reveals the motivations and foibles of a family known for their adherence to traditional American values, yet whose women nevertheless embodied feminism in varying degrees. Grace & Steel tells never-before-heard stories not only about Barbara and Laura but also Dorothy Bush, Barbara’s powerhouse mother-in-law, Pauline Pierce, Barbara’s mother, and Jenna Welch, Laura’s mother. Readers also meet Columba, Jeb’s wife, and Sharon, the former wife of Neil Bush. Laura’s twin daughters, Jenna and Barbara, represent the fourth generation, raised by a coterie of commanding women. As these women’s lives intersect through marriage, child-rearing, political tenures, and scandal (public and private), they emerge as exceptional individuals who held fast to their convictions and upheld a model of personhood that is revered to this day.

“This is a unique and colorful look at one of America’s most powerful political families.” —Publishers Weekly
