Avon Library Valentine’s Month Film Discussion Series: Four Classic Romantic Films

Join us for a discussion of four classic romance films this February, led by Bob Kagan. Please stream, download, or borrow these films ahead of time, and then join us for the discussion via Zoom. Discussions begin at 7:00 pm each Monday in February.

Bob Kagan was Chair of the Communication Department at Manchester Community College for 30 years. In his “unretirement” he teaches Communication courses at Central Connecticut State University and the University of Hartford. He has been leading film discussions at the Avon Free Public Library for the past 5 years.

Feb. 1 – Casablanca – Bogart and Bergman sparkle in this timeless tale of passion set during the backdrop of World War II. If you’ve seen it, here’s a chance to watch it again. If you haven’t seen it, don’t miss this chance. Watch the trailer here

Feb. 8 – Moonstruck – Loretta Costorini, a bookkeeper from Brooklyn, finds herself in a real jam when she goes head over heels for the brother of her fiancée. Laughs galore, starring Cher, Nicholas Cage and Olympia Dukakis. Watch the trailer here

Feb. 15 – A Very Long Engagement – A young woman searches relentlessly for her fiancée, who has disappeared from the trenches of the Somme during World War I. This is a powerful story of love and the triumph of the human spirit. Featuring superb performances by Audrey Tatou and Marion Cottilard. Watch the trailer here

Feb. 22 – Brokeback Mountain – Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger star in this Ang Lee film. Hailed by critics, this is a universal story of love encountering the constraints of society. The film is based on the short story by Annie Proulx. Watch the trailer here
