Avon Old Farms Has Brief Envelope Scare

The contents turned out to be harmless, police said.

AVON, CT - A suspicious letter was sent to the Avon Old Farms School, police said.

But it turned out the mysterious contents were remnants of a dead animal, they added.

The Avon Police Department said Wednesday, it took possession of the envelope after a school administrator turned it over. Officers then coordinated testing of "an unknown material" that was in it, according to a news release.

An Avon Old Farms faculty member picked up the envelope at the school’s post office and saw that it contained a plastic bag with unknown contents, described as a "white powdery substance," police said. The envelope was turned over to the school’s dean of security, who subsequently turned it over to the Avon Police Department.

The state of Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and the state Department of Health examined the contents of the package and the substance was identified as "a dead mouse," police said.
