Avon Woman's Home Micro-Bakery Is Like 'Caring For Family'
Avon's Kate Buffone turns health concerns into success with Breadheads, a home-based sourdough micro-bakery.
AVON, CT — A new home-based bakery is drawing steady demand in Avon, where entrepreneur Kate Buffone says concern over store-bought bread ingredients led her to launch an organic sourdough business from her porch.
Buffone, 38, opened "Breadheads" in February as a licensed micro-bakery offering weekly menus and scheduled porch pickups.
Orders are placed through Hotplate, and customers can opt into text reminders.

“Packaged bread at the grocery store has too many ingredients—most of which I can’t even pronounce,” Buffone said. “And much of the non-organic breads contain toxic pesticides. So I did a lot of research--and never looked back. With my organic bread, I know my family is healthier, especially since sourdough is a probiotic that’s lower on the glycemic index and lower in carbs.”
Buffone said she founded the business with support from her husband, Jim, aiming to provide other families with organic options made from high-quality ingredients.

She said she avoids plastic kitchen equipment in an effort to reduce exposure to plastic-related toxins.
“When I bake for my customers, I feel like I’m caring for family,” Buffone said. “I don’t cut corners when it comes to my own family, and I don’t cut corners for my customers, either.”
Customers have responded with strong reviews, describing the products as having “Incredible taste and texture,” being “Too beautiful to eat,” and “Absolutely delicious—and a work of art.”
Buffone balances the bakery with other professional pursuits.
She teaches ballet at a studio in Canton and has appeared in productions with Playhouse 44.
She was also featured twice on WFSB’s Great Day Connecticut, first for a theater performance and more recently to discuss Breadheads.
The bakery operates through a weekly online menu model.
Customers order in advance and pick up from Buffone’s Avon home at designated times.
Buffone said the venture grew out of personal conviction but has become a broader service to the community.
“With my organic bread, I know my family is healthier,” she said.
