Book ‘Memories of Weatogue and Beyond’ to launch

A book launch and reception for the Weatogue Storytellers' "Memories of Weatogue and Beyond" is Sunday, Sept. 18, 2-4 p.m.

A book launch and reception for the Weatogue Storytellers’ “Memories of Weatogue and Beyond” will be hosted by the Simsbury Historical Society on Sunday, Sept. 18 from 2-4 p.m. at the Ellsworth Visitors Center, 10 Phelps Lane. The public is welcome to attend.

The book was inspired by the historical society’s past president, Kevin Gray, who commissioned resident Mary Mitchell to gather reminiscences from people who grew up in town. Focusing on Weatogue and other sections of south Simsbury, Mrs. Mitchell, June Mackay and Helen Muszynski wrote a number of stories themselves and with a collective name of Weatogue Storytellers, sought out others interested in sharing their memories. Authors wrote about area landmarks as well as the people and places of yesteryear, such as Dr. Owen Murphy, the Rosewood Restaurant, and Kozlowski’s Market.

At the reception, remarks will be offered by both Gray and Mitchell and books will be available for sale and signing by the Weatogue Storytellers. The book, which was edited by Barbara Thomas, retails for $15 or $13.50 for members of the Simsbury Historical Society. For more information, call 860-658-2500.
