AVON, CT - Crews were battling a fire at a historic house on West Avon Road Wednesday morning, a historical society official said.
West Avon Road is the local name for state Route 167, It was closed between Woodmont Road and Arch Road as crews worked the scene.

At 9:57, fire officials posted on their Facebook page that the blaze was out but West Avon Road remained shut down between Burnham and Woodmont.
Avon Historical Society Prersident Terri Wilson said the fire was at the Derrin House, 249 West Avon Road.

It was first , was reported shortly before 8:50 a.m.
The Derrin House was built in 1810. The state owns it, but the Historical society leases it. Members of the Derrin family owned the land on which the house sits from 1766 to 1920, according to society archives.
Wilson said at 10:57 that she was on the scene with the state fire Marshal.
