No-Confidence Petition Submitted at Avon BOE Meeting

The petition criticizes school leadership for dumping social workers.

Avon Superintendent of Schools Gary Mala and Board of Education chair Peggy Roell were the primary subjects of a no-confidence petition submitted at Tuesday night’s school board meeting, the Hartford Courant reported.

The petition was signed by 683 residents, and was prompted by a controversial decision this summer to discard the school system’s social workers in favor of school psychologists, the paper said.

Roell claims the change is one of many ways the district is improving the schools; however, the new program was criticized by several speakers at the meeting, according to the Courant.
