Carols used to be sung all during the year, but only the tradition of singing them at Christmas has survived. Early Christians took over the pagan solstice galas for Christmas and substituted their Christian songs. As early as the year 129, Roman Bishops called out carols to be sung at Christmas services in Rome. Over the centuries the words and meanings of the songs have changed. Some verses were never intended to be Christmas songs. There is more to these stories. Discover some of the fascinating legends and realities that surround the traditional songs of the season.
