A casino arms race may be brewing after Mass. voters gave the go-ahead to build a casino near the state border.

A casino arms race between Connecticut and Massachusetts could be on its way.

Massachusetts voters gave permission to build a casino in Springfield, which is near the state border, according to WTNH.

That’s bad news for Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods, which have both seen declining revenue in recent years as other casinos pop-up across the northeast.

It’s also bad news for the state itself, which gets a cut of slot machine revenue. State revenue from casinos is projected to fall to $190.8 million in the 2017-2018 fiscal year, which is less than half of its peak of $430.5 million in 2006-2007, according to The Day.

Mohegan Tribal Chairman Kevin Brown said the tribe plans to talk to the state legislature and get the green light to potentially build north of Hartford and finish before Massachusetts is up and running.
