BERLIN, CT — Berlin Police Chief Matthew McNally IV will retire Saturday, Oct. 31, after more than 43 years in law enforcement, including the past five years leading the Berlin Police Department, officials announced Thursday.
The Berlin Board of Police Commissioners has selected Lt. Shawn Solek to serve as interim police chief, effective Sunday, Nov. 1.
The department announced the leadership transition in an Oct. 29 news release, recognizing McNally's decades of law enforcement service and his leadership of the department.
"The Berlin Police Department extends its sincere appreciation to Chief McNally for his five years of leadership and service to the community," the department said in the release. "We congratulate him on his retirement and wish him the very best."
Solek, who has served with the Berlin Police Department for more than 19 years, has held several positions during his career.
He began as a patrol officer and subsequently served as a detective, patrol sergeant, and lieutenant of the Patrol Division.
Most recently, Solek has served as lieutenant of the Investigations Division.
As interim chief, Solek will oversee the department's leadership and daily operations while the town transitions to new leadership.
According to the department, Solek will be responsible for maintaining public safety operations and ensuring continuity of services to the Berlin community.
The department did not announce a timeline for selecting a permanent police chief or indicate whether Solek would be considered for the position.
McNally's retirement takes effect Oct. 31, with Solek assuming command the following day.
