The story pits the villainous Rome police chief Scarpia against liberal artist Mario Cavaradossi--who is protecting an escaped political prisoner--and Cavaradossi’s inamorata, Floria Tosca, after whom Scarpia lusts. The action comes to a head when Scarpia offers Tosca this bargain: her lover’s life for one night of passion with him.
