Parishioners Of Prominent Berlin Church To Discuss Future Of Property

BERLIN, CT — St. Paul Parish will hold a town hall meeting later this month to gather feedback from parishioners on the future of the Sacred Heart Church property in East Berlin.

The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 23, at 7 p.m. in the downstairs church hall at St. Paul Church, 461 Alling St., Kensington.

Sacred Heart Church in East Berlin officially merged with St. Paul Catholic Church in Kensington on March 1, 2017, to form a single, united St. Paul Parish.

According to parish officials, the discussion will focus on the Sacred Heart Church property at 66 Cottage St., including the church building, rectory and parking lot.

Topics will include the cost of maintaining the property, the possibility of selling all or part of it, and other considerations related to its future use.

The property currently serves as the site of a bi-monthly FoodShare distribution program.

Parish officials said the FoodShare distribution will no longer be held at the location beginning in August 2026.

The Sacred Heart rectory and church are also used for ministry activities, including Scripture study and the Children's Rosary program.

The church additionally hosts occasional weddings and funerals.

Parish officials noted that there are currently no regularly scheduled Masses at Sacred Heart Church.

All parishioners are invited to attend the meeting.

In an update issued after the town hall announcement, St. Paul Parish asked individuals who are not parish members to refrain from attending.

However, church officials said they welcome feedback from non-members and encouraged community members to submit comments in writing by email or mail for consideration.
