Recently we've been seeing patients walking in with bee stings at Doctors Express. By September bees are beginning to die off and tend to be more aggressive, so it is important to take precautions and not aggravate an angry bee if you are sensitive to bee stings, and especially if you or a loved one is allergic.
In most cases, bee stings can be treated at home.
For those who experience serious anaphylactic allergic reactions, getting immediate medical attention is imperative as allergic reactions by bee stings can close the throat and in some instances even cause death.

For those allergic to bees:
- always carry an Epi pen when outside in any succeptable environment such as parks, playgrounds, on decks, patio’s, etc.
- If the victim has been stung help them use the device as directed. If the victim is supposed to carry one of these devices and does not have it, call 911 immediately! Do not wait for symptoms to appear. Watch any victim closely for signs of anaphylaxis:
- itching
- redness
- hives (raised welts)
- shortness of breath
When in doubt if there is an allergic reaction occurring, go immediately to the closest urgent care center or hospital.

If you have been stung by a bee and are not experiencing an allergic reaction:
1. Quickly leave the area. After a bee stings, it releases a chemical, and a scent that attracts more bees.
2. Remove the stinger by scraping it with a fingernail or anything with a sharp edge (credit cards work well) within 30 seconds of the sting. Do not pull on the stinger or squeeze the sac that is on the stinger – this will cause the release of more venom into the skin
3. Wash the stung area with soap and water and apply an antiseptic.
4. Apply an ice pack to the area to control the swelling if that is a problem.
5. An over the counter antihistamine can be taken to reduce itching, swelling and hives.
If bees are flying around you, the best thing to do is to remain calm and slowly walk away; swatting at them may cause them to get defensive and sting.
