Bethel Elementary Schools Renovation to get Help from State

The grant is part of a larger piece of legislation that will see nearly a dozen towns receive $86.4 million grants for school upgrades.

BETHEL, CT — The state legislative bodies both approved a grant that will pay for 45 percent of the $65.8 million renovations to Rockwell and Johnson elementary schools.

Residents voted overwhelmingly to approve $140,000 for preliminary work on the proposal to renovate Rockwell and Johnson elementary schools back in March 2017. The Rockwell school was last renovated in 1977 and the Johnson school was last renovated in 1980.

Last October, by a narrow margin, voters approved the $65.8 million for renovations to the schools. Residents making up 22 percent of Bethel's registered voters turned out to pass the funding by a 1,477 to 1,265 vote.
