Bethel Finance Board to Craft New Town Budget

The first go-round of the proposed 2019-20 town budget was rejected by voters last week

BETHEL, CT — The finance board will meet Tuesday evening to revise the municipal budget rejected last week by voters.

A public referendum shot down the nearly $38 million spending plan last Thursday, while narrowly passing the school budget.

The amount of wiggle room the finance board will have in which to make cuts is constrained by a burgeoning debt service, as the town prepares to pay for the new police station and renovations to Rockwell and Johnson elementary schools. Since voters have already approved both the capital and school plans, the board may only make cuts to the town plan.

Last year, it took three referendums before the voters were comfortable with the budget.

The meeting is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday in Meeting Room A of the municipal center.
