Care Cuts: free professional cuts to those who need them

Professional hair dresser, Lisa Poulos, provides free hair cuts to those who aren't able to afford them.

BETHEL – A new hair salon launched on St. Patrick’s Day in an innovative location: St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church.

The salon – or, more precisely, hair-cutting station – is called Care Cuts. Its purpose is to provide free professional haircuts to those who would have trouble affording them.

Lisa Poulos, a Connecticut-licensed hairdresser, staffs the program. “It makes me happy to do this,” she said. “When people look good, they feel good.”

Care Cuts has approval from the Bethel Health Department to provide haircuts but no shampooing, perms or coloring. The haircutting station is in a bright, cheerful classroom at the rear of the church building.

Poulos began thinking about offering free haircuts at the church after her mother died, as a way to honor her memory, she said.

Poulos has had enthusiastic support from St. Thomas’ priest in charge, the Rev. Norma Schmidt. “We’re delighted to host Care Cuts,” Schmidt said. “Lisa is tremendously talented, and when she shared her vision for a program offering free haircuts, I wanted to do all I could to help.”

On St. Patrick’s Day, Care Cuts was open to clients at St. Thomas’ Food Pantry. The church hopes to expand the program to other clients in the Bethel area.
