Science Lab: How Do Penguins Stay Dry?

Have you ever wondered how penguins stay dry after they go for a swim? Penguins have an oil producing gland that makes their feathers waxy in order to repel cold water. In our Science Lab, children will mimic the oil gland adaptation through spraying crayoned colored paper penguins and plain paper penguins with water. Children will compare the two penguins and discuss how the wax adaptation helped repel water.

Winter Wonderland

Do you want to build a snowman? On Sunday, December 18th, we will be celebrating and learning about our favorite frosty friends in our Winter Wonderland celebration. In our Science Demo, children will learn about energy fluxes related to snowmelt as they help snowmen melt through dropping vinegar on top of premade baking soda snowmen. Children will also work on their scientific process skills through our Snowman Observation. In our Snowman Observation, we will place one ice snowman outside and one ice snowman inside the museum. Children will observe which snowmen will melt the fastest. Each child will make a prediction about which will melt the fastest and record their observations. In our Winter Craft activity, children will work on their fine gross motor skills through building snowmen out of cotton pads, ribbon, buttons, dried beans, orange felt, twigs, and plastic ice crystals in plastic trays. Children will build their own snowmen from scratch over and over again through switching parts and accessories.

Science Lab: Candy Cane Science

Let’s work on our scientific method skills! On Wednesday, December 21st, children will predict and observe dissolving candy canes. Children will predict which liquid out of cold water, hot water, oil, and vinegar will dissolve candy canes the fastest. After making their predictions, children will place a candy cane into each of the liquids and time how fast it takes the candy canes to dissolve.
