UPDATE:
There was chaos and confusion as a 34-year old woman from Stamford, in a black Infiniti car with Connecticut license plates, rammed into a White House barricade on an outer perimeter, on Thursday, October 3, 2013. This led to Capitol Police surrounding her car with guns drawn. She then backed up, hitting a police car, and drove off towards the U.S. Capitol. A police chase ensued to 2nd Street and Maryland Avenue NE. It ended in gunfire where she was shot and killed. A female child approximately age 1, was found in the car and taken to a hospital, but was found not be hurt. The child is in protective custody.
This event occurred at the White House gates at 15th and E Streets NW at 2:30 p.m. The House was in session when gunshots rang out. It was unclear whether the woman fired a weapon. The Capitol Building was on lock down after the shooting, but lock down was then lifted shortly afterwards. Tourists were evacuated from the area and Pennsylvania Avenue remained closed.
The incident is regarded as isolated and not connected to terrorist activity, but the motive is not known. It is still being investigated.
The police bomb squad is now at the woman's home at the Woodside Green condominium complex in Stamford CT, about to have a robot camera enter her home to check it first.
The woman is believed to have had a history mental illness. The woman has been identified as Miriam Carey, a dental hygienist.
