Senator Murphy Announces New Chief of Staff: Allison Herwitt

Posted by Paula Antolini

HARTFORD—U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) today announced that Allison Herwitt will join his office on May 5th as Chief of Staff.

Herwitt currently serves as Vice President for Government Affairs for the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), where she has spearheaded the organization’s federal legislative work during a period of unprecedented success for the LGBT movement.

“Allison brings a depth and breadth of knowledge of federal policymaking and a record of getting things done,” said Murphy. “She has lived her values through her work, and she will bring that sense of passion and commitment to help lead our office's work on behalf of the people of Connecticut.  She is an idealist but a pragmatist, with a hard won reputation for building bipartisan coalitions on tough issues."

“I'm thrilled to begin working for Senator Murphy and to join a team that is deeply committed to fighting for Connecticut in the U.S. Senate,” Herwitt said. “Whether it has been his work on gun violence, health care reform, or manufacturing, Senator Murphy has already become a leader in the Senate, and it's an honor to come work for someone that I respect so much.”

Prior to joining HRC, Herwitt spent eleven years at NARAL Pro-Choice America, first as a lobbyist and later as the director of government relations.

Previously, she served as a public policy advocate for New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, specializing in welfare reform, employment and child care issues. Herwitt also spent six years on Capitol Hill as an aide to moderate Republican Congresswomen Marge Roukema and Susan Molinari.

Herwitt holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and women’s studies from Goucher College in Baltimore.
