Amity Cross Country Defeats Foran and Hand

Hard-running team still ranked number 1.

Last week’s easy Southern Connecticut Conference victories over Hand (15-49), Foran (15-50), and Sheehan (19-44)  on its home Fitzgerald Trail course in Woodbridge, give Amity’s undefeated boys cross country team a 7-0 record (2-0 against Housatonic Division teams). With these three lop-sided victories, the Black and Gold retain their rank as the No. 1 team in the state.

Clark Shurtleff won the race with a time of 16 minutes, 11 seconds. Sheehan’s Tom Lupoli  (a 2010 track All Stater at 1000 meters) was second at 16:36. Behind him came Spartans  Nate Arndt (16:52), Adam Kelley (16:52), Shae Belinski (17:14), Mike Yuan (17:15), Connor Dunleavy (17:17), and Brendan Regan (17:46).

According to Amity Coach Bob Orgovan, “We came into this race knowing that we’d have to run against Lupoli. Even though the race was run on a very rainy day and the track was very muddy, I was pleased with how we ran. I saw real improvement across the board. These times were the best everyone had recorded. With the rain and the mud, our times are better than they appear to be. Right now, I’d say that we’re looking good. From our No 2 to our No. 7 runner, there’s a gap of only 41 seconds.

Following Tuesday’s Housy showdown against Cheshire and Shelton, Amity now looks ahead to the SCC Championship Meet, which will be held on Thursday, Oct. 20 at Hammonasset State Park in Madison, starting at 1 p.m.
