Recent Happenings

Celebrate Spring Day
While the forecast said otherwise, the sun came out and we had a wonderful day filled with workshops and activities at this year's Celebrate Spring festival at the farm. In addition to vegetable and flower seedlings, participants came out to get garden planning tips from Farm Manager Steve Munno, and to hear from Eileen Garcia on starting a school garden.  A big thanks go out to the Girl Scouts of Derby who cleaned up a garden area in front of the farm house, to FireDog Food Truck who offered refreshments, and to ALL volunteers who took part in the day's activities.  Once again, our Maypole Dance was a hit and enjoyed by all.

FoodCorp at Work:
Last week, FoodCorps service member Eileen Garcia, completed the installation of four new school gardens with a series of raised beds in the courtyard of Ansonia Middle School.  While each school garden has its own basis of inspiration, these gardens will serve as sources of education for teachers, and opportunities to further engage parents and students in healthy eating habits. With the success of the first school garden workshop held at the farm on May 10th, we look forward to hosting more seminars to guide both educators and community members on school gardens. If you're interested in starting a school garden and need some guidance, call us today at (203) 736-8618.

And on Monday May 19th , the "Singing Chef," Neil Fuentes, served as Master of Ceremonies at the 1st Annual VITAHLS Healthy Chef Challenge at Molto Bene in Ansonia. Fifth and sixth grade winners from healthy chef challenges in each of Ansonia, Derby, Seymour and Shelton came together at the restaurant to test their mettle and show off their healthiest salad recipes. FoodCorps Service Member Eileen Garcia has been instrumental in bringing about this healthy food challenge by helping to organize the  Ansonia contest.  Town Mayors served as judges in this valley-wide competition.
