Beth Heller responded immediately for help with Sperry Road

A Bethany resident contacted her when heaps of trash were dumped beside dirt road

My wife and I walk everyday on the dirt part of Sperry Road, in Woodbridge, near Lake Chamberlain. Our dog Boomer loves it. We walk there about 360 days a year, rain, snow, shine of hot and humid weather. It is a magnificent treasure that the citizens of Woodbridge have generously given all of us, for we are Bethany residents.

At the beginning of July we were alarmed to see a huge pile of trash had been dumped beside the road, near the Woodbridge end. The next day there was a pile of yard refuse including shredded plastic sheets dumped near the Bethany end of the road. Then someone dumped a tire to the side of the road near the brook coming down from Lake Chamberlain. The following day there was a discarded TV dumped on the other side of the road. We were very discouraged. Trash tends to act like a magnet, attracting more trash. I wondered when someone would dump a refrigerator.

I wrote an email to Beth Heller, first selectman of Woodbridge, thanking her for sharing this park with us, and telling her about the trash problem. I doubted she would respond to a non-Woodbridge resident.

To my astonishment and delight the trash was removed by the next morning. She also wrote an email thanking me and encouraging me to keep in touch. I feel so fortunate to find that she and I share a love for Sperry Road. ------ Dr. Jeff Boyd
