With last week’s victories over Shelton (3-1), Lewis Mills of Harwinton (3-2) and Oxford (3-2), the Amity boys volleyball team has won seven of its last eight matches and improved its record to 8-4 (2-2 against Southern Connecticut Conference opponents.)
After dropping the first game 25-23, the Spartan spikers stormed back to sweep three games in a row from Shelton (25-19, 25-7, 25-13). Amity was led by Miles Radin (eight kills), Jon Friedman (seven kills), Sean Gallagher (seven blocks), and setter Eliott DeMelier (25 assists),
According to Coach Mike Cofrancesco, “We came out sluggish and got off to a very slow start. Unfortunately, we didn’t pass well in the first game and we struggled offensively. Once we got our passing going, our offense improved and we played very well.”

The Spartans outlasted visiting Lewis Mills 22-25, 25-23, 13-25, 25-20, and 15-8. Chase Brinton played an outstanding all-around match, recording 11 digs, 10 kills, and four service aces. Friedman added a team-high 15 kills and a team high nine blocks, Libero Eric Iassogna chipped in with 11 digs. DeMelier put up 41 assists and was perfect in his 25 serves (with one being an ace).
“They were a good team and we played a pretty even match. After we lost two of the first three games, the guys pulled together and played with a passion and intensity that I had not seen before before. They refused to lose.”

The week ended with another five-game marathon. As was the case in its two previous matches of the week, the Spartans lost the first game 25-23. After drubbing Oxford 25-8, the Wolverines clawed back and took Game #3, 25-23. Amity rebounded from its 2-1 deficit to win the last two games and the match 25-19 and 15-13.
Cofrancesco said, “Oxford is a new school but it has a solid boys volleyball team. As the three 2-point games showed, our play against them was very inconsistent. We aren’t big enough to play and dominate a power game. We win with our passing and defense. We finally got both going in the last two games and played very well.”
Brinton (20 kills), Friedman (15 kills and seven blocks), Radin (eight kills and nine digs), DeMelier (51 assists), and Gallagher (seven blocks) led the winners to their come-from-behind victory.
