The Sport of Curling

Want to learn more about Curling? The Nutmeg Curling Club has something to offer participants of all ages and abilities. Learn why people love to curl.

If you are looking for a sport that almost anyone- at any level of physical prowess can participate in- curling might be your sport.  The only thing that I knew about curling before this year was that it is an Olympic event.  I hadn’t ever watched it, but I knew that it existed.

No one really knows how my daughter first became interested in curling, but our family has learned so much about the sport and its leagues while helping Abbey fulfill her desire to participate.

Curling is a “nice” sport.  The sport creed focuses on not embarrassing your opponent; a player is not to applaud a bad shot by their opponent AND they are not to applaud a good shot by their own team.  Both of these actions would embarrass their opponent.  Socializing before and after games is encouraged and generally includes food and beverages (age appropriate)

The ice is specially prepared for curling.  Unlike ice skating surfaces, the curling ice is pebbled.  More on this at a later date.

The Nutmeg Curling Club is located near The Beardsley Zoo in Bridgport

(203-615-0077).l The Club hosts several leagues; a junior league for elementary school aged children, HS leagues meet on Tues and/or Thursday afternoons.  There are casual and competitive adult leagues.

Hopefully you’ll want to learn more about curling and maybe even try it.  The Curling Club hosts several Learn to Curl days where you can try it out .  It’s worth a shot- you might just end up hooked like those already in the league.

More at another date…………….
