Can Bethany Community School Go Green? Students Show BOE How it Can be Done!

Sixth grade enrichment students present their research at BOE meeting

The Bethany Board of Education was treated to a presentation last night by members of Michelle Schwneger’s sixth grade enrichment class. Sarah Saxe, 12, and Neha Pashankar, 11, showed a Power Point presentation, complete with animation, about how to make Bethany Community School a greener place.

The girls offered a thorough and well-developed plan outlining dozens of ways to make the school more environmentally friendly. Suggestions included recycling bottles and donating money to charity, turning computers off when not in use and using reusable containers for lunches instead of disposable wrappers.

The girls also discussed global warming and suggested the school switch to fluorescent light fixtures and keep lights turned off when not in use.

The next step, the said, was to show their presentation to the rest of the school and possibly email it to parents so they can discuss the ideas with their children.

Saxe and Pashankar answered questions from the board, which was very impressed with their efforts and wished them luck as they took their project to the next step.
