Girls Cross Country Takes Fourth at Windham Invitational

Coach Sean Mahon: "This was a good start to our season"

Amity girls cross country Coach Sean Mahon was more than pleased with its fourth place finish (out of 15 schools) in the Varsity 2 race at Saturday’s Windham Invitational in Willimantic.

“I really didn’t know what to expect,” he said. “With all the new people on our team I wasn’t sure how we would run nor did I know much about opposing schools and what they would have on their teams. I thought we did quiet well. Coming in fourth is a very pleasant surprise. The girls and I are all happy with their efforts and with the results. This was a good start to our season.”

Kate Beland led the Lady Spartans as she completed the 3.1 mile course in 20 minutes, 53 seconds and finished 11 out of 103 runners. Lee Ann Beedle added a 14th place 21:07. Minnie Chen (24th—21:22), Sara Beland  (32nd—21:42), and Rebecca Race (35th—22:02) complete the list of Amity’s top 5 finishers.

Mahon added, “We ran in a nice pack, which is what I told the girls before the race to focus on. I had hoped our top seven would run together and they did. Our new girls did fine for their first race. Now they know what cross country is all about and what they need to do to improve.”

The Black and Gold open their dual meet season on Tuesday, hosting Southern Connecticut Conference inter-divisional rival East Haven in a 4 p.m.  race at the Fitzgerald Trail in Woodbridge.
